Argyro Zenetos

Dr. Argyro Zenetou (Zenetos) is currently an Emeritus Research Director at the Institute of Biological Resources and Inland Waters HCMR, Argyro has a 40 year experience in the systematics and biodiversity of benthic macrofauna. She has research experience of environmental impact studies and development of indicators related to pollution/disturbance from industrial effluent (tannery, red mud, coarse metalliferous waste), oil spills, and trawling). Her main area of research until 2005 was the Saronikos Gulf (which is being monitored for over 30 years) and the development of its benthic ecosystem. She was until 2020 the co-ordinator of the Hellenic Νetwork on Aquatic Invasive Species (ELNAIS) http://elnais.hcmr.gr/  and in the period 2005-2020 Chief Editor of the journal Mediterranean Marine Science (http://www.medit-mar-sc.net/).

As a member of the SEBI2010 expert group on “trends in invasive alien species -see http://biodiversity-chm.eea.eu.int/information/indicator/F1090245995, she was responsible for marine alien species and has developed a Pan-European database which is updated to 2023 under European Environment Agency (EEA) contracts. She is a consultant to EEA and UNEP/MAP MEDPOL, and to UNEP MAP RAC/SPA for development of MAMIAS (a Mediterranean database). Member of the EASIN Editorial Board and national expert in ESENIAS, ICES/IMO WGITMO, COST 1209 and COST17122.

Argyro has published more than 240 peer-reviewed publications among which 5 reviews of alien species in the Mediterranean and 2 reviews of alien species in European Seas. She has also published 2 books (1986: Bivalvia of Greece; 2004: alien molluscs in the Mediterranean) and edited reviews on the State of Marine Environment (2002)  and State of Fisheries (2007) in Greek waters.
