Panagiotis Kasapidis

Panagiotis Kasapidis is a Research Director at the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. His research focuses on molecular ecology, population genetics, phylogeography, conservation genetics, marine biodiversity and the study of invasive species using molecular approaches. Since 2009, he has worked with next-generation DNA sequencing technologies and, since 2012, has specialised in the development and application of DNA metabarcoding and environmental DNA (eDNA) methods for marine biodiversity assessment. He has participated in more than 15 European and 10 national research projects and has extensive experience in research coordination, molecular laboratory methods and the development and management of marine research infrastructures. His scientific output includes 43 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, and he has co-supervised 10 PhD theses.

Within the INVASIONS project, Panagiotis will contribute to the molecular component of NIS monitoring, particularly the development and implementation of DNA and eDNA metabarcoding approaches. As part of the HCMR team, he will contribute to the genetic analyses of biological and seawater samples, DNA barcoding of selected NIS, development of genetic reference information, and interpretation of molecular data for assessing NIS detection and population connectivity. These activities form a central component of WP3, for which HCMR leads the DNA-metabarcoding approach, and will support the comparison of molecular and conventional monitoring methods.
